GISTM

The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) sets the benchmark for safe and responsible tailings management worldwide.

What is GISTM?

The Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management was developed by the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) in response to catastrophic tailings dam failures.

The standard sets out 77 requirements across 6 topics, covering the entire lifecycle of tailings facilities from design through closure and post-closure management.

77 Requirements

Comprehensive requirements covering governance, operations, monitoring and emergency response.

6 Core Topics

Knowledge of the consequences, risk management, design and operations, management and governance, emergency response, and public disclosure.
